Neil Evans Writes:

The Widnes site is being cleared for new business premises and the siding area cleared for use as a cycle track. The resultant track material has been donated to us free of charge but we have retained a contractor “Trackwork" to dismantle and transport it etc.  It is our's to be used on the railway, primarily for the extension, and we cannot sell it.

The total length of track amounts to approx one kilometre of sidings (flat bottomed rail) and 4 points which Steve Stowell has assessed and they can form the basis of our requirements for the proposed station loop at Corwen.

As regards the extension to Corwen, it has been the long term intention of the railway to get there since 1974 during which time we have reached Carrog.

We are presently coming to the end of an exhaustive and complex exercise to obtain the necessary Transport and Works Application (a combination of planning application and Railway Act) for the extension from Carrog to Corwen.

This has been done in partnership with Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government and we are indebted to all their help and assistance with this.

The project will cost approx £2.5m and will be heavily reliant on grant aid from our partners. If all goes well we hope to start on site some time in 2009 and the donated Widnes Track will play a great part in the works.

This works will involve the re-laying 2 miles of abandoned railway and building a new terminus station at Corwen (where the donated track will be used)

A request has been received from Neil Evans for information on the whereabouts of surplus GWR Spear Top Fencing - any condition. It will be for the new station at Corwen (when it is built) and in order to give us time to renovate the panels a call is going out now. Please contact Neil through the LR office (01978 860979) if you have any information.

On 11th June, the cruise ship the “Grand Princess” disembarked passengers at Liverpool for trips to places in the North West of England and Wales.

125 Passengers took the option of a trip on Llangollen Railway through the beautiful Valley of the River Dee. They boarded the 11 am train, 5 chocolate and cream carriages pulled by steam locomotive No 6430 and travelled to Carrog, where the busses picked them up again for an onward trip. Jim Richie (Stationmaster at Llangollen) accompanied them on the trip and they told him that they were very impressed with the Railway.

Pete Evans has asked if volunteers can contact him to form a Permanent Way Track Gang to work every Monday on whatever needs doing, from brushwood clearing to scrap recovery to track maintenance.

Volunteers will need to have or take the PTS test to ensure that they are safe when working trackside.

This will appeal to anyone who has Mondays free (or even the odd Monday free) and would like to spend the day in the fresh air, away from road traffic noise, doing light (or heavy) physical work to get away from the stresses of normal daily life.

For more information, please contact Pete Evans through the Railway Office on 01978 860 979

Due to members of the Diesel Group having less time available due to family and work commitments, the locomotive fleet is being reduced to a level such that restoration and maintenance requirements match the volunteer time available.

5643 Landcruise 28th June 2008

For the first time in 15 years the Mid Summer Land Cruise at Llangollen was marred by rain when 5643 took the 19.00 departure down the line to Carrog.

The occasion as used by the Wirral Railway Circle to mark the association's 40th anniversary and an updated version of their famous head board was displayed on 5643.

Thanks from the sponsor LR (GW) LG, restorers of 5532 for all the support in running this train and making a contribution to the costs of preserving an old engine.

Next year with BR Standard Tank 80072, we hope!

Tommy Walton Retires 28th June 2008

When that stalwart of the loco dept, driver, fireman and man of mechanical parts, Tommy Walton finally called it a day his mates had a whip round and bought him a retirement present - a garden fork minus one prong! Clearly a vintage item.

Fortunately the disappointment evaporated when the real present appeared displayed on Black 5 44806 wearing the name plate SCOTS GUARDSMAN.

He got a Thomas cake as well and there were flowers for the missus.

Tommy will be back as a volunteer and you'll still see him on the footplate at Llangollen for a while longer.
